It grew in popularity and now it is known as a such a crazy weekend that student's friends from other universities all try to come up and get drunk. UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — As the student-created drinking event State Patty’s Day approaches, Penn State and State College Borough are working together to enhance safety measures and mitigate excessive drinking and its associated risks. This year’s event is expected to take place Feb. 28 to March 2. At this point in time, State Patty’s is the weekend right after THON. Back in 2014/15, the University really cracked down on it; they would pay downtown bars to stay closed for the day. As of recent, they have let up on it, but when I was at PSU the past two years, many bars still closed early in the night. State Patty’s Day is slated for Saturday, March 1, and over the years, the weekend between THON and spring break has been a “challenge,” according to the release. “Many who engaged in excessive drinking were from out of town and were visiting students and residents living in State College,” the statement read. What started as a way for Penn Staters to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in 2007, when the popular drinking holiday fell over spring break, has turned into, well, many different things — an excuse to day-drink, one of the most crime-ridden days in Happy Valley, and now, its birthed State Patty's Day is a student-led social gathering that acts as a Pennsylvania State University alternative to the traditional Saint Patrick's Day. It began on Friday, March 2, 2007, because Saint Patrick's Day fell during spring break , which would have left students unable to celebrate the holiday while at school and with friends. Despite it not being the real Saint Patrick’s Day, we’re celebrating a little sooner, and there’s no better way to do so than by decking out in everything green. You can get your green gear pretty much at any clothing store downtown, and some for less than $20 at McClanahan’s. Bars opened as early as 7 a.m. to serve traditional Irish breakfast and beer throughout the day.
